Trying 06:16
Trying when the sky darks its own blueness the river wends its lonely turns I need to see you trying for us I need to see you trying you can placate me with one honest kiss when the earth is shamed by her own cruelness I need to see you trying for us I need to see you trying I’m scared of what the times are doing to us I need to see you trying you can placate me with one honest kiss why won’t you do it?

Dance 03:54
Dance take off your shoes girls and dance this is the time of your lives take while you have half a chance see while the light is in your eyes and dance keeping your lamps oiled bright seize the white horse by the bridle already god is denied this is the start of survival dance take of your shoes girls and dance beauty reveals by the glance whispering ‘cross the Styx the shuffling feet and shaking hips of dance

Not Going Anywhere I don’t believe we are going anywhere I see your face and feel the silk of your hair beyond these days lurk equally hope and despair by which we are moved until we disappear and carry on in transition but not going anywhere not going anywhere we held some dreams like flakes of ice in our hands look from above the world see how ocean meets sand no such luck for the passage of us my dear our heads are mites upon the bright and dark sphere for all the sensation of motion not going anywhere

Sidewalk Doves see the rippling of the sea round new york city see the light shine off the waves in the coney bay if you loved me if you leave we were the sidewalk doves of new york city time goes whirling on its spin and lets you in if you wake in autumn leaves and recall the dream I was told you looked for me amongst the sidewalk doves of new york city if you loved me if you leave we were the sidewalk doves of new york city in the whistling of the wind through the urban din by the dream you lied and believed and did beautifully yes you love me when you leave we’ll be the sidewalk doves of new york city new york city

Good Arm 04:44
Good Arm with this heart I do not a little hunger with this soul I do not a little pain you fat old stars sit not in sorrow give me your good arm for I miss my aim and you stars that shine so brightly like diamonds all amongst the milky way the milky way those stars were not sparked for nothing we are fragments of their flame you fat old stars sit not in sorrow guide us home in this black night and you stars that shine for ever give me your good arm for I miss my aim for I miss my aim

Luck/Hope 06:06
Luck Hope man needs a little luck to have a little hope this I know in the well of the silent heart oh that a young boy could cut this trap from in me the invisible string that enters my mouth that makes despondence and the hopeless choker ah ii ah, ah ii ah the hopeless choker boy, what force in thee made you to set the gull free that you can’t even free your own man-self now? oh that a young boy could cut this trap from in me the invisible string that makes despondence and the hopeless choker ah ii ah, ah ii ah the hopeless choker

This LP was tracked half in New York and half in New Zealand thanks to the crucial support of Jolie Holland and Creative NZ. The project occurred sporadically and with large gaps in activity from first NY recordings on 19 November 2009 to final mastering in NZ in mid 2015. Thanks for your patience.

Shahzad Ismaily recorded, engineered and was main logistics man on the NY stuff (tracks 1,3,5,7,8) which was captured at Rivington 66 in Manhattan. Milan Borich engineered and recorded First Part and pre-mixed, edited and did additional tracking on Best Thing, Trying and Dance and final mixes of First Part, Good Arm and Dance at The Wall Studios in Kingsland. Kerry Furlong (with Geoff Maddock) recorded Dance at Peak Rd in Kaukapakapa and engineered additional mixing and tracking at his place in Beaconsfield St, Grey Lynn. Geoff recorded Sidewalk Doves at Rick Bryant’s place in Newton. Joel Hamilton mixed Trying at his studio in Williamsburg and Milan added drums later. Hook mixed Not Going Anywhere at York St (RIP). Simon Gooding did final mixes of Best Thing, Sidewalk Doves and Luck/Hope at the Lab. It was mastered at The Lab by Oli Harmer. A bundle of work is not included here including a marvellous take of a song lost forever in cyberspace. Thanks to those musicians & technicians who also played a part – Anji Sami, Finn Scoles, Ben King, Nick Abbott, Patrick Nicholson, Max Corradi, Mika Doo, Jolyon Mulholland, Mike Gibson, Dougie Bowne and Jordan Stone.

In addition to all those already mentioned, great gratitiude to all contributors and supporters particularly: in NY: Florian Habicht and Teresa Peters (and for the vid!), Jan Bell, Gary Velletri, Jana, Dana, Masha at Ocean Avenue, Jenny Quilter, Ila Couch and Claude Coleman Jr., Carlos Ramirez, AlSarah; John Modell + Megan and Nick Franich in sunny LA; special thanks to Chris Gough, Jaime Gough
and all at Native Tongue Publishing; Anthony Healey and all at APRA NZ; Peter Baker and Rhythmethod; Lisa Paris and Lucy of The Label; much thanks to UK fellows: Sean Newsham, Mike Holdsworth, Howard Monk and Lucy Jamieson of The Local; Delaney Davidson; Jeremy McPike; Matt Crawley; Deborah, beloved Quinn and our many good friends and family, Dad, Kate and especially, in her keenly felt absence, presence and love, ‘Grandma Jan’, to whom this album is dedicated.
